Outriders plays like it was raided by the fun police. I went into Outriders ready to be surprised after its disappointing demo, but it turns out those first few missions are representative of the final game-flat arenas connected by uneventful hallways, underpowered abilities, and guns that aren’t much fun to shoot. It’s not a good sign for a loot shooter when I’m tired of shooting stuff by hour three. The potential to expand Outriders’ story and world with new classes or abilities via future DLC, paid or otherwise, may be something that People Can Fly finds itself unable to resist down the road. It also used that subclass to build on the already expansive lore of the world. Other massive games have done so for years Destiny 2, for example, recently shook up its core gameplay by adding an entirely new subclass, Stasis, which plays radically different from anything else. However, new classes could quickly shake up how the game plays. The game also includes enough save slots for up to six characters, meaning players have plenty of room to experiment with their preferred load-outs or just to have a variety of fire teams with friends. The game’s current build boasts four classes - Devastator, Pyromancer, Trickster and Technomancer - each with their own unique abilities and focuses. Outriders looks as if it will be a complete experience at launch, but the promise of DLC could make the game infinitely more replayable.
Recently CBR had the opportunity to speak with Outriders’ Creative Director Bartek Kmita and Lead Game Designer Piotr Nowakowski on the planned future for Outriders, but it seems all hands are focused only on getting the game polished and ready for release. Developer People Can Fly has a wealth of experience designing games, but there’s always the concern over where a new IP can go. Players that pre-ordered the game can download the Hell’s Rangers content pack, but those that didn’t don’t have to miss out on this content forever. Outriders officially released on April 1st, 2021, but many players have already gotten through the beginning of the game on the Outriders demo that released in February. Thankfully, it doesn’t take too long to be able to get the full use out of the Hell’s Rangers content pack items. It isn’t automatically available to players right when they start the game, so they’ll need to do a bit of legwork in order to get their hands on it. Those players that already did so and recently started playing the game may be confused about how to redeem this gear, though. The way that the game comes to a grinding halt is pretty frustrating, too: The sudden fade to black makes it feel almost intentional, like People Can Fly noticed my poor performance and decided to close the curtains themselves so they didn’t have to see anymore. We’ve been through this before-we know that server troubles will eventually work themselves out and things will be smooth sailing, but there’s no good reason that online disruptions should interrupt a game that I’ve been playing mostly alone. Meanwhile, People Can Fly is issuing hourly updates on Twitter as it reboots servers and tries to get Outriders into a healthy state. The Outriders subreddit is full of fans eager to level up their mains, but instead many are venting frustrations about being stuck on the login screen.
